Licensure Area: English as a Second Language K-12 Title and Audience: Understanding Idioms; Grades 8-12 in ESL (Lesson should target the Advanced Learners) Objectives: Listening 5. Understand key vocabulary/phrases. L.5.1 Understand a few words or phrases with basic English grammatical forms. L.5.2 Understand figurative language and idiomatic expressions. L.5.3 Identify meaning of key word or phrase in passage that provides context. Description: Students will listen to an audio conversation between two people- a man and a woman. The students will be given a worksheet with the dialogue of the audio. However, the worksheet will have blanks inserted into it each time the speaker uses an idiomatic expression. The students will have to listen and fill in the blanks. They will be allowed to listen to the audio twice (three times if it seems too difficult). As a whole-group, the teacher will play the audio again and pause after each idiom. The students will share their answers, and the teacher will provide feedback. At this time, the students need to write the correct answers on the spaces provided on the back of the worksheet. After each expression has been covered, the students will be instructed to search the internet for the meanings of the idioms. They will write what they found on the back of the worksheet below the correct version of each expression. Each student should also write the name of the website where he/she found answers beside each expression. The class will share their answers at the end of the lesson. Scaffolds: Students will need to have experience using search engines on the internet. They will need to know how to access the internet from the computers and where to type their search items. They will have to learn which sites are good resources and which sites are not for this particular assignment. For instance, if the idiomatic expression is used in a blog, the student will not be able to understand its meaning from that alone. Technology to Support Authentic Instruction: The students will use familiar search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and/or Bing to find their answers and navigate through search results.
